Congressional Pro-Choice leaders sound alarm over Supreme Court’s decision to hear Louisiana abortion law
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pro-Choice Caucus Chairs U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Pro-Choice Taskforce leads Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA), Katherine Clark (D-MA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Jackie Speier (D-CA), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Judy Chu (D-CA), Ted Deutch (D-FL)and Julia Brownley (D-CA)released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court announced today that it would hear its first abortion case since President Trump appointed Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh:
"Three years ago, the Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that is identical to this one in Louisiana. There is no reason why the Court should have to take this issue up again, unless it plans to rule differently. The only thing that has changed between then and now is the addition of two anti-choice Justices.
"It's clear, by announcing that it will hear this case, this new Court is going to start rolling back the constitutionally-protected right to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion.
"There is no bigger threat to Americans' right to have an abortion than the current make up of this Supreme Court. We cannot continue to rely on the highest court in our land to protect our rights under Roe v. Wade. H.R. 2975, the Women's Health Protection Act, would ensure that every person, regardless of their zip code, would have access to abortion services free from medically unnecessary restrictions like this Louisiana law. It is time for Congress to act and put the protections that have been guaranteed under Roe v. Wadeinto law. The Pro-Choice Caucus stands ready to lead the charge, protect Roe v. Wade, and fight for reproductive health care as a human right."
