PCC Co-Chairs React to Historic Ballot Measure Victories, Election Outcomes

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement on yesterday's election, including the historic victories, as ballot measures protecting reproductive rights were passed in seven states:

“Yet again, in red states and blue, abortion was on the ballot.

In eight states, the people overwhelmingly voted to codify reproductive freedom. In seven of those states, their voices will be heard and abortion rights enshrined in state constitutions.

In Missouri, we saw a historic shift toward reproductive freedom as Missourians voted to overturn their state abortion ban. In New York, we saw landmark protections for personal freedom as voters insisted no person be forced to endure discrimination for their reproductive health outcomes or decisions. In Colorado and Arizona, in Nevada, Maryland, and Montana, voters successfully fought for their right to abortion to be recognized and codified.

Yet again, the people have spoken loudly and clearly: abortion is health care, and politicians do not deserve the right to make people’s medical decisions.

Even as we celebrate the steps forward in these states, we share your grief and the grief of so many Americans who have been in this fight with us. We share your frustration in Florida, where a clear majority of voters demanded your right to reproductive freedom be recognized, and it will not. And we share your frustration across the country, as the executive and Senate leadership that orchestrated the fall of Roe v. Wade celebrates a return to power.

In the months and years to come, there is no doubt we face a daunting path to securing reproductive freedom nationwide. We are clear-eyed about the threats ahead, from emboldened Republican extremists to a hostile White House and administration. We believe in a future of reproductive freedom for every American, and we will never stop fighting for you.”
