Reproductive Freedom Caucus Co-Chairs Condemn House GOP Tax Scam Bill's Threat to Reproductive Health Care Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Reproductive Freedom Caucus (RFC) Co-Chairs Reps. Diana DeGette (CO-01) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) released the following statement in response to the passage of the House GOP tax scam bill, which they condemned as an attack on reproductive health care:
“As dawn broke, House Republicans— directed by Trump —voted to dismantle Medicaid as we know it. They voted to eviscerate access to a trusted health care provider and make our communities less healthy by putting basic health care like birth control, cancer screenings, and even maternity care out of reach for millions of Americans. All this to advance an extreme agenda that Americans do not support.
When the nation went to bed, the reproductive health care impacts of this bill were already severe. Then, in the dead of night at the 11th hour, Republican leadership changed the bill yet again to squeeze another abortion ban into the fine print. While Democrats held the line, fighting back every step of the way, Republicans passed a Big Billionaire Buyout that bans every insurance plan on every Affordable Care Act exchange from covering abortion. The repercussions of this nationwide ban would be catastrophic—nearly 1 in 7 Americans have been covered through ACA marketplaces since 2014. Every single Member of our Caucus stood with the people, voting a resounding, deafening no on this sham of a bill.
Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans’ claims that they will not ban abortion nationwide were always a lie. Overnight, the receipts came in. We will continue to call out this attack on the people for exactly what it is: a Big Bogus Backdoor abortion ban.”
