Reproductive Freedom Caucus Co-Chairs Condemn Trump Administration Move to Drop Emergency Abortion Defense

Tuesday, March 4, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Congressional Reproductive Freedom Caucus (RFC) Co-Chairs Reps. Diana DeGette (CO-01) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) released the following statement on the Trump administration’s plans to drop the U.S. government’s case against Idaho over the state’s violation of Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) protections for emergency abortion care:

“Nearly one year ago, the Solicitor General of the United States stood before the Supreme Court to defend the laws of our nation and the lives of all people. She made clear what we already know: that regardless of state bans in Idaho or elsewhere, federal law requires lifesaving care in any medical emergency, even if the care needed is an abortion.

Tomorrow, Donald Trump's Department of Justice plans to unceremoniously drop that case, abdicating its responsibility yet again to defend and enforce the law and putting the lives of Idahoans at immediate risk. No matter what Donald Trump decides to say tonight as he addresses Congress, his actions speak louder. He does not respect the law. He does not care who he harms. He has no regard for the families his decisions could destroy.

At bare minimum, every person in our country should know that whether they are pregnant or not, their doctor will do everything in their power to help them survive a medical emergency. Instead, this is how the Trump administration begins women's history month: with a public display that women's lives matter less to them than their political agenda. There are no words strong enough for such shameful moral depravity.”
